If you love Game of Thrones, you probably love the concept behind Dragun Beauty. Inspired by the power of transformation, the cosmetics brand celebrates the art of change — a vision launched by transgered Influencer, Nikita Dragun who just won the 2019 Streamys Award for Beauty. The brand aims to empower makeup-lovers of all shapes, skin tones and sexualities. And while nobody can argue with the beautiful concept behind the brand, there still stands the big question: Is Dragun Beauty any good?
To find out, we gathered unbiased, unpaid reviews online. Since we only trust reviews posted on impartial websites, this means we went to Reddit and Makeupalley. Let’s see what the beauty community thinks about Dragun Beauty.
About Dragun Beauty
Dragun Beauty is all about unleashing the fantasy within. The brand is known for their TRANSformation Kits, a face palette and concealer/color corrector, packaged in an adorable violet dragon egg. Visually, it’s something to get excited about.
Now you might be wondering, “what’s with the dragon eggs?” The whole concept of dragon eggs captures the soul of the brand. Just like these mythical creatures that hatch into the world, makeup is also a magical and transformational experience.
Nikita Dragun, the founder, connects to this narrative on a personal level because her entire life has been about emerging as someone different. Growing up in the Middle-of-Nowhere, Virginia, Nikita escaped to her fantasy land through makeup but always felt like there was something missing. But not anymore.
Reviews on Dragon Beauty
DragunEgg TRANSformation Kit
According to the website, the DragunEgg kit contains everything you need for “the ultimate face-filtered fantasy.”
The kit contains:
– DragunFire® Skin Perfecting Potion (concealer)
– Pink Opal and Yellow Topaz highlight pigments
– TRANSformation Face Powder
Collectively, this system aims to correct the appearance of under eye dark circles, cover blemishes and create the perfect canvas for makeup. While this concept sounds fantastic, are we fans? Let’s see what the critics have to say.
TRANSformation Face Powder
Unlike any other generic face palette, Dragun Beauty’s version is geared toward the trans community. Keeping this in mind, we know that the palette may cater to a certain type of aesthetic that doesn’t necessarily the average makeup wearer.
Thumbs up
Reddit reviewer carlosShook, who is all thumbs-up for the TRANSformation face powder, notes, that since this product is geared toward a niche market, it’s a big step for the LGBT community. As he explains, “I’m gay I don’t wear eye shadow I keep my make up to a slight amount but still wear it enough to be noticeable and I bought one for me to have just as a Nikita Fan. I just think this product has a very specific target audience, while to some of you, it may seem like nothing new or something basic.”
Cassandrasworld was also enthusiastic about the possibilities of the brand. He wrote, “Gay guy here, I love what Nikita was aiming for with this product but I hate the price point. $25 for a brand that’s just been launched is too much. We don’t know the quality of the product yet.” Typically when new and relatively unknown brands emerge, the price point treads on the lower side to gain trust with the customers. Only after a brand has established itself can it justify luxury prices. On the plus side, many reviewers noted that they would have supported this launch if the prices were cheaper.
Thumbs down
Price aside, the majority of reviewers seemed less than ecstatic about the face powders. We were disappointed because we loved the inclusiveness that Dragun Beauty inspires.
As Ryd-Mareridt wrote, “looks like one of those Barbie-style creamy palettes my sister and I used to play with as children.” Polkadotrouke was even harsher: “These colours and tones look so over the place? It looks like an aliexpress rip off palette that got the undertones wrong.”
Reviewer twal1234 replied, “Dumb pan sizes, swatches that look like literal chalk (one of the highlighters looks nice, I’ll give her that), creepy packaging that panders to her ego, and the price of my monthly cell phone bill? Tappin’ out.”
DragunFire® Skin Perfecting Potion
DragunFire® is a concealer and color corrector all in one. It works well on all skin tones, helping to perfect the appearance of dark circles, discoloration and blemishes. And what did the beauty community think? Thankfully, the reviews are a lot more positive than the face powders.
Kokoberry4 said, “I think it’s very fitting she came out with a colour corrector meant to counteract the grey cast a beard would give you underneath make-up. That is something drag queens and transgender women often struggle with and can relate to.” Here, Dragun Beauty is bringing something unique to the table.
We often underestimate the enormous diversity of beauty needs across the globe, be it to conceal acne scars or a 5 o’clock shadow. So perhaps anyone who’s complaining about this particular product might misunderstand the uses for this product. As Futurames said, “I’m pretty sure nearly everyone can use an orange corrector for something whether it be disguising a beard, under eye circles, discoloration, etc. I’ve seen reviews from people with very varying skin tones and they all found a place for it in their routine.”
Overall, we’re pleased to see that Dragun Beauty is doing something inclusive and creative with makeup. Despite the mixed feelings about the range of products, there’s collectively a lot of kudos for the concealer. And although the face powers may still have room for improvement, we can expect the brand to continue growing and evolving with time.
